Postcards from Around the World
As one way to practice authentic writing, and as a tie-in with geography classes, my ELA classes use Postcrossing.com. Students take turns sending out postcards to various countries around the world. In exchange, we received postcards from various people in many different countries. It enables my students to get a glimpse of life outside of our rural area. A large portion of my students have never traveled outside of our home state. I've found that even reluctant writers will do this project, just to be involved and because it's real. My classes look forward to receiving new postcards, and we have a large map in our classroom on which we track the postcards' origins.
As a teacher, I pay for the postcards and postage. I enjoy this project and think it's a worthwhile way to spend a few dollars. Currently, postage is $1.05 to send postcards over seas.
This site is designed to "show-off" our postcard collection. Enjoy!
